Just a safety reminder, when removing old paints (by scraping them or using a sand paper), be sure to wear a face mask. Old paints may contain lead particles that you could inhale. As we all know, lead is very toxic to the lungs and body.

Five Steps for Painting the Outside of your Home

Step 1: Gather your materials. You need to have paint brushes (note: the larger the size of the brush, the more area you could cover), step ladder, home bucket, sand paper (note: the rougher the paper, the thicker the surface it gets), cleaning brush, old news paper or drop cloths, masking tape, exterior house paint, wood filler or body filler, putty knife, wire brush, paint thinner (for enamel based paints only), paint remover, and spray gun (optional).

Step 2: Prepare your working area. You have to close the windows, cover areas that you do not want to be repainted, trim plants that may get in your way, cover plants or any fixtures that may come in contact with the paint (use the drop cloths or old news paper) and fix damaged parts. If there are holes, better cover them with a body filler (use the putty knife for applying) and then sand them up to achieve a smooth surface.

Step 3: Clean the exterior of your house. Here, you may use brooms, brushes or pressure washer. You may even use your garden hose to wash up debris, sands, dusts, muds or anything that may prevent you from attaining a smooth surface. Dry the area afterwards. For areas with peeling paints, remove them using a paint remover and scraper. Some house painters use sand paper and a pair of putty knife for this.

Step 4: Prime the surface. Primers are used for primary coating. They help improve the color of the pain, increase paint adherence, seals the wall to prevent bleeding and decreases the thickness of final coating (the thinner the final coast, the more money you could save). For masonry surfaces, primers are a must. For redwood and cedar surfaces, use oil-based primers and not water-based because the latter causes bleeding through the final coating.

Step 5. Apply the Final coat. The final coast is the paint that you wish to apply. You may use a brush or roller. Some painters make use of a spay gun but it may require some skills to operate such. When applying the final coat, start from the distal area going to your center. Make sure that you organize your stroke so that there would be no overlapping of paints or sagging. It is best to repaint the roof first before the walls to prevent dripping.

How To Prep For Painting – Home Selling Tips

These are the five steps to take when repainting the exterior of your house. If in case you are not that confident yet, you may hire a professional painter or house renovation team to do the work for you. This, of course, may require you to pull out some cash!

Boiler Maintenance For Long Lived Systems

boiler serviceWith the current state of the economy, most of us can barely afford simple luxuries we were used to a while ago. Things have gotten so bad for some of us to a point where we are always looking for ways to save money on the things we already own and those we intend to buy. The things we take for granted are usually the ones that end up costing us more. Take your boiler unit for instance. This is an important item in your home that is responsible for keeping different parts of your home or office warm during those cold seasons.

If this device was to break down in the middle of winter, you’d not only be jeopardizing your health but that of everyone else living in your home. To avoid heating problems, you’d be better off carrying out regular maintenance to your unit. Here are some important tips to help you avoid boiler repair and save money.

Hire The Right People

With so many boiler engineers available, finding the right one for the job shouldn’t be too difficult. However, in order to ensure you get the best Vancouver boiler service, it would be best if you only hired experienced plumbers for the job. It matters a lot whether you are using a newer or older boiler model when searching for boiler maintenance experts. Some maintenance companies are only experienced in maintaining and repairing new models and won’t do you much good if you are using an older version. To be on the safer side, make sure your plumber is experienced in fixing your model before investing in their boiler services.

Do Regular Maintenance

If you’d like to save money on maintenance, then it would be ideal for you to learn as much as you can about the unit you own. Familiarizing yourself with your system will make it easy for you to perform regular maintenance tasks as well as troubleshooting it in case there is a problem. In most cases, your unit doesn’t require major repairs to get it back up and running. Once you understand the system, you will be able to keep it working properly for the longest period of time.

How Do You Benefit from Regular Maintenance of Your Boiler Unit?

One of the most noticeable benefits of performing regular maintenance to your unit is reduced utility bill costs. Without proper servicing, your unit eventually starts working harder in order to keep the components running. Soon, you’ll be paying more on utility bills since your system works twice as it is supposed to. Regular maintenance can help you avoid such problems.

Boiler Maintenance Tips

Repairing your unit is usually very expensive. Waiting until the system breaks down will not only leave you in a cold home but will also cost you more on repairs. It costs even more to purchase a new boiler since you are not only required to purchase the unit but also hire a professional to install it. Regular servicing will not only keep your unit running perfectly but will also help you avoid such expenses.

While most of the maintenance can be done easily by DIY enthusiasts, hiring a professional to carry out the task every now and then can save you a lot of trouble and time. There are plenty of companies to choose from and all you need to do is select one with a good reputation and one that has been around for some time. Try searching on line for plumbing companies and add the word “reviews” to your search phrase.

How to Find A Plumber You Can Rely On

When you develop plumbing issues in your home, chances are that you become frustrated. This is because you do not know how to fix it usually. Although major plumbing problems usually require the help of professionals, simple problems can be fixed by you. The following article will give you easy plumbing tips.

Ensure that everyone in your household knows how to turn off the main water supply. Alternatively, knows how to contact someone who can. In the event of a burst pipe or other water-related emergency, you should immediately turn off the water to prevent flooding, structural damage, and a sky-high water bill.

Don’t Freak Out in an Emergency

Have a large bulletin board in the kitchenette or lounge, which you could write reminders for yourself of things you need to do or bills you need to pay. Emergency phone numbers, contacts, brochures, postcards and notes to yourself, look better arranged on a bulletin board and should not clutter your refrigerator or other appliances.

You can check your toilet for leaks by adding a few drops of food coloring, Kool Aid or some coffee grounds to the water in the toilet’s tank (not the water in the bowl). Check the water in the bowl after a half hour or so. If any of the coloring agent is visible in the water in the bowl, the tank is leaking, and you will have to have it repaired.

A Clear Drain Saves Hassles

If you have a clogged drain, don’t use cleaning chemicals to try to clear the clog. These harsh chemicals can corrode your metal pipes leading to leaks and broken pipes over time.

In the far north west corner of the country we have some very cold winter nights which can cause problems if your pipes are not protected. If you live in an older home and think your pipes might be at risk for freezing, allow your faucets to trickle slightly, especially if your pipes are located in a crawlspace. The running water prevents the pipes from freezing as quickly as they would otherwise. If you do end up with a leak or a burst pipe and want it fixed permanently, click here for a dependable plumber

Prevent Freezing Problems

Frozen pipes from harsh winter weather is a problem that no-one wants, so plan now to winterize your exterior faucets and pipes against freezing conditions. A simple way to accomplish this is to find the exterior water shut-off valve located inside your home (often located in the basement). Turn off the water valve to stop water flow, and then open up the outside faucets to drain out any water that has collected. Be sure to turn off the outside water faucets tightly after the water has drained out. Take in any hoses you may have outside so they don’t crack from the cold weather.

Avoid using hard cleaners on your toilets, such as drop-in cleaner tabs in the tank. When these tabs are almost completely dissolved, what’s left of the tab gets washed into the bowl. This can then end up clogging the toilet’s port holes, preventing the toilet from flushing properly. It can take months for this debris to finish dissolving in those holes.

Keep the Drains Clean

If you ever get clogged bathtub or shower drain, you could feed it baking soda, one cup’s worth, with a cup of vinegar to chase it. Plug the opening or cover it with a cloth while the chemical reaction takes place. After letting it sit for a few moments, clear the pipes out with a gallon of boiling water. This should help clear your pipes of accumulated soap and hair scum. If the clog was something worse then you could try using a plumbers snake.

Plumbing Tips for Drains

Clean your dryer’s lint trap. This can prevent various problems, including a fire. Inspect your lint trap every so often for tears or holes that could cause lint to go into your pipes, this could cause clogs or other problems you will have to deal with.

Don’t do Patch Work

Have you tried patching your pipe with the store-bought patching kits only to have that section of your plumbing continue leaking? Replacing the damaged pipe is a more permanent solution than patching. First, you must shut off the main water valve, and drain the water from the damaged section. Cut out the damaged section of the copper pipe, leaving about an inch of extra pipe on both sides of the damaged area. Remove corrosion from inside the pipes with a wire brush. Apply flux to the replacement pipe and the remaining pipe. Slide the piece of replacement pipe into place with couplings. Apply solder all around the joint, and use a propane torch to solder the replacement section into place.

Tricks for the Toilet

If you have a crack in your toilet tank, you can sometimes fix this with an epoxy resin. However, it is very difficult to keep up with this type of maintenance, and the best bet may be contacting the supplier and ordering a new tank to be installed in your bathroom. Nevertheless, keeping some epoxy resin on hand for emergencies is a good idea.

Believe it or not, it is not a very good idea to use a plunger if your toilet is clogged. Plungers just push whatever is stuck deeper into the drain. Instead, it is a better idea to use a closet auger. It will do a better job and is affordable.

As was stated above, it is normal to become frustrated by plumbing problems your home may have. But, these problems can usually be easily fixed, if you know how. Use the tips that this article has provided to you in order to get started in plumbing repairs as soon possible! If not we have listed a good plumber in Vancouver who guarantees their work and don’t charge an arm and a leg for it.
